Preparations Underway for the Transfer of the Commissioner of Canada Elections
Gatineau, Friday, August 8, 2014
- Pursuant to the Act to amend the Canada Elections Act and other Acts and to make consequential amendments to certain Acts, which received Royal Assent on June 19, 2014, preparations are well underway to transfer the Commissioner of Canada Elections from Elections Canada to the Public Prosecution Service of Canada.
- The Public Prosecution Service of Canada, Elections Canada and the Commissioner are working together to ensure a smooth transition. It is expected that the official transfer of the Commissioner and his employees will occur sometime in the fall of 2014. However, the Commissioner will assume responsibility for his public communications on August 8, 2014.
- Effective immediately, all media enquiries should be directed to the Commissioner at 1-855-759-6737. Elections Canada will no longer respond to media enquiries on behalf of the Commissioner.
- Also effective immediately, the Commissioner has a new website where the public can find information about his office and submit formal complaints of alleged wrongdoing under the Canada Elections Act. The website address is www.cce-cef.ca.
The Public Prosecution Service of Canada is responsible for prosecuting offences under federal jurisdiction in a manner that is free of any improper influence and that respects the public interest. The PPSC is also responsible for providing prosecution-related advice to law enforcement agencies across Canada.
The Commissioner of Canada Elections is responsible for ensuring that the Canada Elections Act and the Referendum Act are complied with and enforced.
