Canada Elections Act Charges Laid

OTTAWA, May 14, 2012

Pursuant to a decision by the Director of Public Prosecutions, two charges were sworn on May 2, 2012, by the Commissioner of Canada Elections under the Canada Elections Act, a federal statute. A third charge under the Criminal Code was also sworn. (The details of these charges are provided below.)

The accused will appear before the Court of Quebec in St-Jérôme on June 5, 2012.

The Commissioner of Canada Elections is responsible for ensuring that the Canada Elections Act and Referendum Act are complied with and enforced. The Chief Electoral Officer appoints the Commissioner under the Canada Elections Act.
